I've been feeling a little out of touch with the world and states over the past two months from a lack of tv and newspapers. So lately i've been browsing a number of different news websites to see what going on. And it amazes me. Russia has been having some major problems over the last two weeks surrounding a vote that took place last Sunday. At this point they are approaching no: parlament, right to demonstration, and freedom of press.
In U.S. news our wonderful President is alway fun to read about. Two weeks ago I think, whenever the riats in Miami took place, Bush was in London. Some protestors tore down a statue of Bush in mockery of Sadam's statue falling in response to U.S. actions in Iraq. His reply when questioned was roughly as follows,
"It is good to be in a country where people are allowed to demonstrate and express their opinion. If you were in Iraq under Saddam you would not be able to do that."
(I went and found one of the sites covering the protest that includes a quote from Bush. Not the one I orginally read.)
The irony, demonstrators in Miami were having confrontations with the police when it was only a couple thousand of protestors. They had over 100,000 people at the protest in London with much less police intervention. If I recall correctly from history, we broke away from England and founded our country on the basis of freedom to express one's beliefs without persecution as long as it doesn't harm others.
In more recent news congress passed a wonderfully troublesome bill related to the public school system. Check it out here. For some alternate news check out Infoshop.org they have some interesting articles. Knox directed me to the site, and I find it very informative for a balace of liberal and concervative news.
