Today became a late start though the plan was originally to get up and go to the Vatican Museum early. Instead we left around 10:30 and had to wait in line for 50 minutes. The museum is quite impressive, though the Sistine Chapel is the highlight, there are several other key attractions. An obsure one is the Map Hallway with 43 paintings detailing 15th century Italy in regional pieces. The cartagrapher spent several years traveling throughout Italy making notes for the paintings, which are more accurate then most modern Italian maps. The other room of note is the Raphael Room containing his "School of Athens." I always imagined it as 2x3 foot fresco for some stupid reason, but is in reality a 20x15 foot wall fresco.
After the museum we ate some 1 euro pizza bread and then headed to the Spanish stairs to sun bath in the 60 degree weather from 3 till 5. More window shopping followed that and dinner at the same resteraunt as the night before.
Dinner was extremely interesting because a group of German speaking people were sitting next to us. I thought I heard one of the men asking the others how much the bread was going to cost and they replied they didn't know. So being the helpful person I am I answered that it costs a euro a person. He thanked me and then went on to clearify that he was asking about buses (smacks forhead). I told them bus tickets were also a euro a person. They then started up an entire hour plus dinner conversation on where we came from, what we're doing in Germany, who they were, etc. They were extremeley friendly, and it ended with Sheena getting the phone number and address of their 25 year old son in Munich because she said she was interested in visiting Munich some time. They also asked us to join them for dinner and drinks the next evening at their expense, but we had to turn them down based on prior arrangments. more to come....
